Printing AI-Generated Images: What You Need to Know

AI image generators such as ChatGPT, Claude, Midjourney and other creative AI tools can produce some amazing artwork. However, there is an important difference between an image that looks fantastic on a screen and one that contains enough resolution to produce a high-quality large-format print.

If you are creating AI artwork with the intention of having it professionally printed, here are a few things worth knowing.

AI images are often smaller than you think

An AI-generated image may look incredibly sharp and detailed on your phone, tablet or computer screen, but the actual image file may contain relatively few pixels.

Screens are very forgiving because an image is normally viewed at a relatively small physical size. Printing the same image at 50 cm, 70 cm or even 1 metre wide requires those pixels to be spread across a much larger area.

As the image is enlarged, the effective print resolution (DPI) falls.


For example, an image that is:

2048 × 2048 pixels

would produce approximately:


  • 17 × 17 cm at 300 DPI
  • 29 × 29 cm at 180 DPI
  • 43 × 43 cm at 120 DPI


It is still exactly the same image — we're simply spreading the available pixels over a larger area.


What resolution do we recommend?

For fine-art and photographic printing, we ideally like files to have plenty of resolution at their final print size.

As a general guide:


300 DPI – Excellent resolution and ideal for close viewing
240 DPI
– Very high quality
180 DPI
– Our recommended minimum for most high-quality artwork
150 DPI
– Can still produce good results depending on the image and viewing distance
Below 150 DPI
– Enlargement or specialist upscaling may be required


Large posters designed to be viewed from further away can sometimes be printed at a lower resolution than detailed fine-art prints.


So how large can an AI image be printed?

There isn't one maximum size for an AI-generated image.

It depends on the pixel dimensions of the file you have downloaded.

A 1024-pixel-wide image and a 4000-pixel-wide image may look equally impressive on your screen, but they are very different files when it comes to printing.

As a useful calculation:


Maximum print width in inches = pixel width ÷ required DPI


For example, a 3000-pixel-wide image at our preferred minimum of 180 DPI gives:


3000 ÷ 180 = 16.7 inches (approximately 42 cm)


Trying to print the same file at 1 metre wide would reduce the effective resolution to only around 76 DPI.


Can an AI image simply be enlarged?

Yes — but there is an important distinction between resizing and AI upscaling.

Simply making an image larger in Photoshop doesn't create the original detail that wasn't present in the file.

Modern AI upscaling software can do considerably more. It analyses the image and generates additional pixels and detail, often producing excellent results.


However, upscaling is not magic.

It cannot guarantee that every fine detail will be reconstructed correctly, and very large enlargements can reveal typical AI artefacts, particularly around:


  • faces and eyes
  • hands and fingers
  • hair
  • lettering and typography
  • fine lines
  • repeating patterns
  • architectural details
  • highly detailed textures


For this reason, we always recommend checking AI artwork carefully at high magnification before committing to a large print.


If you're creating AI artwork specifically for printing

If you know that you eventually want a large print, create and export the image at the highest resolution available from your AI software.

Where possible:


  1. Generate the artwork at the highest available resolution.
  2. Download the original/full-resolution file rather than a preview or screenshot.
  3. Avoid repeatedly saving the image through WhatsApp, social media or other services that may compress it.
  4. Use the highest-quality export option available.
  5. Consider using a high-quality AI upscaler before printing at larger sizes.
  6. Keep the original file as well as any enlarged versions.
  7. Send us the actual image file rather than a screenshot of it.


Do not worry about changing the DPI number yourself.

Changing an image from “72 DPI” to “300 DPI” without changing its pixel dimensions does not magically increase its quality. For printing, the information we're most interested in is the image's pixel dimensions and intended print size.

AI-generated artwork can produce fantastic prints — it simply needs to be prepared correctly.

The important thing is not how detailed an image appears on screen, but how much genuine image information is contained in the file we're being asked to print.
